Welcome to the Teaching and Learning with Generative AI

Last update: July, 2024

This website was designed to support OTC faculty who wish to integrate AI technologies into their teaching practices to enhance student engagement and foster innovative learning experiences.

Generative AI is revolutionizing education by offering personalized learning paths and creative content generation. This site aims to equip you with the knowledge and skills to understand and use these technologies effectively, ensuring your students can also use them ethically in their academic and professional work.

Generative AI (GenAI) is a type of artificial intelligence that can create new content. It uses patterns and massive amounts of data skimmed from a wide range of digital sources to generate text, images, music, and more. For example, given text, audio, and video prompts, GenAI can write articles, produce artwork, or compose music by learning from existing examples.Watch this Generative AI in a Nutshell video that provides a visual explanation of how GenAI works. The most well-recognized GenAI tool today is ChatGPT, but there are now many others as shown below.

Ethan Mollick, a professor and generative AI expert at the Wharton School of Business, has conducted extensive research on the beneficial applications of GenAI in teaching and learning. Watch his short presentation, “AI in the Classroom with Ethan Mollick,” which highlights several of the following educational uses:

  • Enhancing Assignments:
    • AI can help create complex, customized assignments.
    • Students can use AI to complete tasks and receive instant feedback.
  • Simulations and Scenarios:
    • AI can generate interactive simulations for various subjects.
    • These tools help students practice and understand concepts in real-time.
  • Personalized Learning:
    • AI can tailor educational content to individual student needs.
    • It can provide personalized feedback and guidance.
  • Teaching Support:
    • AI can assist teachers in creating quizzes, lesson plans, and other educational materials.
    • It enables educators to focus more on student interaction and less on administrative tasks.
  • Interactive Tools:
    • AI can act as a virtual tutor, providing explanations and answering questions.
    • It can engage students in dialogue and critical thinking exercises.

Integrating generative AI into your teaching can revolutionize the way you engage with students and enhance learning experiences. However, it’s important to assess your readiness before diving in. Here are a few key considerations to help you determine if you’re prepared to leverage this powerful technology in your classroom.

  • First, evaluate your familiarity with generative AI. Do you understand the basics of how it works and its potential applications in education? To learn more, watch this informative video series, Introduction to AI for Teachers and Students, and consider enrolling in OTC’s foundational course, Teaching with AI to build your knowledge and confidence. Understanding the core principles will enable you to make informed decisions about how to incorporate AI effectively.
  • Next, use the tools to fully understand the capabilities and limitations of generative AI. Below this section you will find a list of the most popular generative AI tools.
  • Finally, reflect on your teaching goals and how AI can support them. Are you looking to personalize learning, automate administrative tasks, or provide innovative assignments and feedback? Clearly defining your objectives will help you choose the right AI tools and strategies that align with your pedagogical aims.
