Facilitating Authentic Assessment in the Learning Environment

You’ve learned about objectives and assessment methods. Now it’s time to pair those methods with strategies and put them into action in the learning environment.

Keep in mind that the word assessment refers to any assignment, discussion, quiz, and in-class activity in a course where the students are demonstrating their understanding of concepts learned.

What is an Exit Ticket & How Do I Use It?

Exit tickets are super versatile, totally free, require little to no planning, and will give you the biggest bang for your buck. They don’t have to be graded or they can be participation-based only. You can even use them to help track attendance.

Here’s how it works: At the beginning of class write a prompt/question on the board. Students will respond to the prompt on a notecard throughout the class and pass to you on their way out of class. To keep things paperless, you can also post the question in Canvas and have students submit their exit ticket in Canvas. The added benefit of going paperless is that you have an automatic record-keeping system in Canvas and can assign points to each exit ticket by creating an assignment in Canvas.
