One of the best ways to maximize your seated course time is to utilize Canvas, OTC’s learning management system (LMS), for activities that can be done outside of class.  This approach benefits you and your students by maximizing your seated class time and extending learning beyond the physical classroom.

Before you start building your course in Canvas, ask yourself the following questions:

  • What do you want your students to be able to do, know, or value as a result of taking your class?
  • What learning activities or assessments will provide students with opportunities to develop or demonstrate achievement of the course learning outcomes?
  • Which of these learning activities or assessments would best lend themselves to an online format and which to a face-to-face format? What combination of online and in-class activities would best address the course teaching and learning objectives?

How to Leverage Canvas for Learning

Put your instructional materials and content in Canvas

Add your instructional materials to Canvas. There are many great benefits to adding your instructional materials to Canvas. Allowing students access to instructional materials before, during, and after class will greatly increase their exposure to concepts covered.

Create assignments, discussions, and quizzes in Canvas. Now that grades are being kept in Canvas, it’s a great time to go paperless! By creating assignments, discussions, and quizzes in Canvas students can have access to learning activities outside of the physical classroom so that they can continue learning where they are.

Students can develop peer assessment skills by using Canvas Peer Review Assignments. (Links to an external site.) This facilitates ease in giving and receiving peer feedback. Assignments can be posted online, and students can post instant responses or email their feedback.

Navigation

Organize your course so that students navigate through the instructional content and assessments with ease. Modules are a great place to start.
