Exit Tickets: The Biggest Little Strategy
What is an Exit Ticket
This strategy is one of my favorites. It’s super versatile, totally free, requires little to no planning, and will give you the biggest bang for your buck. They don’t have to be graded or they can be participation-based only. You can even use them to help track attendance.
At the end of class (or maybe the beginning), simply give students a prompt which they respond to on a notecard and pass to you on their way out of class. You can also post the question in Canvas.
Ways to Use an Exit Ticket
The prompt can be a question about the material or about their thoughts on their learning or how the class is going, what they would like to know more about, the possibilities for prompts are endless.
Formative Assessment
The prompt can relate to something from that day/week’s lesson and serve as an informal check for understanding. This can also be useful to keep tabs on students who might be out of class. By having both students who attended class on campus and those off campus participate, you can ensure that everyone is still learning.
