Types of Learning Objectives

Objectives represent the learning that is being measured and they should be clearly stated to learners and any other audience.

Knowledge

Factual information, remembering, defining, describing, often early targets in a course or sequence of learning, for a basis for deeper learning.

Example: Identify the capitals of European countries.

What is the intended learning?

To know the capitals of European countries.

Understanding

Reasoning using facts to extrapolate, infer, classify, compare, generalize

Example: Identify the motivations of authors of historic documents.

What is the intended learning?

To infer motivations of authors based on content of text and knowledge of historic content.

Application/Skill

Repeating a learned process

Example: Uses calipers correctly.

What is the intended learning?

To perform accurate measurements using calipers.
