Types of Authentic Assessment

Let’s take a minute to review the types of assessments and then we will dig into how to facilitate these in the learning environment.

There are generally two types of assessment – formative and summative. Anything that students do that helps you to assess their knowledge, understanding, application, analysis, and evaluation of concepts is assessment. Consider an English composition course that has students brainstorm topics for an essay, select one of those topics, write an outline, write a rough draft, and then submit a final draft. Which of those are formative and which are summative?

All are formative except the final draft, right? Yes! All of the components leading up to the final draft are shaping the final draft of that student’s essay. Let’s break it down into roles:

THE ROLE OF THE STUDENT

THE ROLE OF THE TEACHER

Engage in self-regulatory behaviors that promote positive outcomes.

Actively engage in learning experiences provided.

Think creatively and critically in order to solve problems.

Make connections between learning in the classroom and the real-world.

Create active, rich, meaningful, and purposeful learning experiences for students.

Promote self-regulatory behaviors that promote positive outcomes for students.

Connect learning experiences and concepts to the real-world.
